Thoughts on abortion rights

"It's my body and I have the right to do with it as I want."

1) No one has the right to do with their body as the want.

  • Putting Meth in your body is illegal no matter how much you want to.
  • Selling your body for sex is illegal (unless you work in a brothel in Nevada, and even then it is highly regulated).
  • You can't even kill your body if you want. You will go to jail for trying.
So, no, you don't have the right to control your own body.

2) It is not your body you are talking about. If I took a tissue sample from your arm, kidney, liver, blood, even hair and nails the DNA inside those cells would show that they are part of you. It would be undeniable that they were your body.

But if I take a tissue sample from your unborn baby the DNA is distinctly different.  An unborn child from the moment of conception has a unique DNA that has never existed before in history. Oh, it would be obvious the child was your descendant. But equally obvious he wasn't part of your body, but his own unique person.

3) There is the accusation that Pro Lifer's pictures of unborn babies are rigged to look older than they are for gestational age.

I had Chicken Pox with my second pregnancy. I was sent to a specialist who did a sonogram to make sure the little one was OK (I didn't realize at the time that the reason for this was so we could decide if we wanted an abortion or not). I was 5 weeks along at the time. That baby that I saw with my own eyes on that monitor had a head, arms, legs, eyes, and mouth. Now, this was before the 3D sonograms came out so it was fuzzy, making it impossible to see much in the way of details, but even at this very early age he was obviously a baby.

(And just to complete the story, that baby was born 8 months later and is now 6'2" tall with a beard and plays the guitar, cornet, and piano.)

So, when you talk about "controlling your own body" what you are really talking about is controlling someone else's body; deciding if another unique human being is too inconvenient for you to allow her to live.
